Dua on Seeing the New Moon

The crescent marks a new month, and a stretch of your life that does not return. When the Prophet ﷺ saw it he supplicated with four things at once: security, faith, safety and submission — this world and the next in a few words.

It closes with a beautiful sentence addressed to the crescent itself: 'My Lord and your Lord is Allah' — a declaration that this body, which some peoples worshipped, is as created as you are, owning you neither benefit nor harm.

It is said on sighting the crescent of any month, not Ramadan alone.

On sighting the crescent

Allahumma ahillahu 'alayna bil-amni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-islam, Rabbi wa Rabbukallah.

O Allah, bring it over us with security and faith, with safety and submission. My Lord and your Lord is Allah.
