Dua for New Clothes

New clothes are a small joy, and a door of gratitude was opened for them. What is asked is not that you disdain the new, but that you remember on wearing it that it is provision Allah drove to you 'with no strength or power of my own'.

There is a fine phrase in the supplication: 'and provided it for me with no strength or power of my own'. You are the one who worked and bought it — and still you acknowledge that the strength was Allah's. That is what gratitude means: seeing the hand that gave behind your own hand that took.

On wearing something new

Praise be to Allah, who clothed me with this garment and provided it for me with no strength or power of my own.
