Sleep is a lesser death — Allah calls it a taking of souls: 'Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die during their sleep.' So the moment you open your eyes you are in a blessing returned to you after it was taken.
That is why the first thing the Prophet ﷺ said on waking was praise for the return of the soul, not a request for anything. There is something worth pausing over in that: begin the day with thanks before asking.
Whoever wakes in the night and says the words of tawhid, then seeks forgiveness or supplicates, is answered; and if he performs wudu and prays, his prayer is accepted.
La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir. Alhamdu lillah, wa subhanallah, wa la ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah. Allahumma ighfir li.
There is no god but Allah alone, without partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is capable of all things. Praise be to Allah, glory be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and there is no might nor power except with Allah. O Allah, forgive me.
