Dua for the Marketplace

Markets are the places most beloved to the devil and most disliked by Allah, as in Sahih Muslim — not because trade is blameworthy, but because they are a place of heedlessness, oath-swearing and greed.

That is why remembrance there carries greater reward: you remembered Allah where He is forgotten. Of the one who says this on entering, the Prophet ﷺ said Allah writes for him a million good deeds, erases a million bad ones and raises him a million degrees (at-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah).

Note that the remembrance is an acknowledgement that all good is in Allah's hand — the most fitting thing to say in a place where people imagine the good is in theirs.

On entering the market

لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ، وَهُوَ حَيٌّ لَا يَمُوتُ، بِيَدِهِ الْخَيْرُ، وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, yuhyi wa yumit, wa huwa hayyun la yamut, biyadihil-khayr, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir.

There is no god but Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise. He gives life and causes death, and He is Living and does not die. In His hand is all good, and He is capable of all things.
