Dua for the Night Prayer

Our Lord descends every night to the lowest heaven when a third of the night remains and says: 'Who will call upon Me, that I may answer him? Who will ask of Me, that I may give him? Who will seek My forgiveness, that I may forgive him?' Three doors open every night, and most people are asleep.

When the Prophet ﷺ stood at night he opened with a long supplication of praise first — 'O Allah, to You belongs praise; You are the light of the heavens and the earth and all within them' — and then asked. That is the order: praise, then request.

Whoever wakes in the night and says the words of tawhid and then asks forgiveness or supplicates is answered; and if he performs wudu and prays, his prayer is accepted.

Opening the night prayer

Allahumma lakal-hamdu anta qayyimus-samawati wal-ardi wa man fihinn, wa lakal-hamdu anta nurus-samawati wal-ardi wa man fihinn, wa lakal-hamdu antal-Haqq, wa wa'dukal-haqq, wa liqa'uka haqq, wal-jannatu haqq, wan-naru haqq. Allahumma laka aslamt, wa bika amant, wa 'alayka tawakkalt, wa ilayka anabt.

O Allah, to You belongs praise: You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all within them. To You belongs praise: You are the light of the heavens and the earth and all within them. To You belongs praise: You are the Truth, Your promise is truth, the meeting with You is truth, Paradise is truth and the Fire is truth. O Allah, to You I have submitted, in You I have believed, upon You I have relied, and to You I have turned.

On waking in the night

Allahumma ighfir li.

There is no god but Allah alone, without partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is capable of all things. Praise be to Allah, glory be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and there is no might nor power except with Allah. O Allah, forgive me.
