Dua for a Newborn

A newborn is a blessing received with praise and supplication, not with amulets and threads. The Prophet ﷺ would seek protection for al-Hasan and al-Husayn saying: 'I seek protection for you both in the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every envious eye' — adding that Ibrahim did the same for Isma'il and Ishaq.

The transmitted congratulation, from al-Hasan al-Basri, is: 'May Allah bless you in the gift given to you; may you give thanks to the Giver; may the child reach maturity; and may you be granted his devotion.'

From the Sunnah at birth: the 'aqiqah on the seventh day with shaving the head and naming. Hanging a blue bead is not from it.

Seeking protection for a child

U'idhuka bikalimatillahit-tammah, min kulli shaytanin wa hammah, wa min kulli 'aynin lammah.

I seek protection for you in the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every envious eye.

Congratulating the parents

Barakallahu laka fil-mawhubi lak, wa shakartal-wahib, wa balagha ashuddah, wa ruziqta birrah.

May Allah bless you in the gift given to you; may you thank the Giver; may the child reach full maturity; and may you be granted his devotion.
