Dua for Debt

The Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge from debt in his prayer. He was asked why so often, and said: 'When a man is in debt, he speaks and lies, and he promises and breaks his promise.'

A man came to 'Ali unable to meet what he owed, and 'Ali said: 'Shall I not teach you words the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me? Were you to owe a mountain of debt, Allah would settle it for you.' Then he taught him: 'O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful against what You have forbidden, and enrich me by Your bounty so I need none besides You.'

It is the same supplication as the one for provision — which follows: whoever is sufficed by what is lawful and made independent of people has his debt settled.

What 'Ali taught the indebted man

اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ

Allahumma ikfini bihalalika 'an haramik, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak.

O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful against what You have forbidden, and enrich me by Your bounty so that I need none besides You.
