No one is ever struck by anxiety or grief and says this supplication without Allah removing his distress and replacing it with relief. They said: 'Messenger of Allah, shall we not learn it?' He said: 'Yes — whoever hears it should learn it.'
These are not incantations whose effect is then awaited. They are an admission of fact: that you are a servant whose forelock is in His hand, whose affair His decree governs, and whose judgement upon you is just. Settle that in the heart and what has descended becomes light.
Shortest and greatest is the supplication of Dhun-Nun in the belly of the whale: 'There is no god but You; glory be to You; I have indeed been among the wrongdoers.'
Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatika, nasiyati biyadik, madin fiyya hukmuk, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsak, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, awista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indak — an taj'alal-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jala'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.
O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You with which You have named Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept hidden in the knowledge of the unseen with You — that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness and the remover of my anxiety.

There is no god but Allah, the Mighty, the Forbearing. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, and Lord of the Noble Throne.

لا إله إلا الله العظيم الحليم، لا إله إلا الله رب العرش العظيم، لا إله إلا الله رب السماوات ورب الأرض ورب العرش الكريم
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wal-'ajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa dala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal.
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from the burden of debt and from being overpowered by men.

اللهم إني أعوذ بك من الهم والحزن، والعجز والكسل، والبخل والجبن، وضلع الدين وغلبة الرجال
When
Whenever anxiety or grief descends, and in any distress you can find no way out of.
Say them abundantly in prostration — the servant is nearest to his Lord when prostrating.
Do not rush the answer: it is part of the etiquette of supplication not to say 'I supplicated and was not answered.'

What is the supplication of Dhun-Nun?
+
'La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimin.' The Prophet ﷺ said no Muslim ever supplicates with it for anything without Allah answering him.
