The houses of Allah are the most beloved places to Him, and whoever enters is His guest. So we were taught to open the entrance by asking for mercy, and the exit by asking for bounty — and there is a fine distinction there: in the mosque you ask for mercy; in the marketplace you ask for provision.
It is sunnah to enter with the right foot and leave with the left, and to pray two rak'ahs of greeting the mosque before sitting.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ
Bismillah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah. Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik.
In the name of Allah, and prayers and peace upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy.
بسم الله، والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله، اللهم افتح لي أبواب رحمتك
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ، اللَّهُمَّ اعْصِمْنِي مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ
Bismillah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah. Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik. Allahumma i'simni minash-shaytanir-rajim.
In the name of Allah, and prayers and peace upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, I ask You of Your bounty. O Allah, protect me from the accursed devil.
